Colt Delta Elite unsupported chamber question.

Looking at my first 10 mm.  New to the forum, although I've gotten some good info just lurking around......I'm not all that familiar with 1911 style pistols, and have never fired a 10 mm.  Hunted/fished/shot all my life so a lifetime of bad habits built up, no formal training/competition etc.  Carried concealed for 20 years in Texas (currently XDS .45), but now that Texas is finally getting on board with open carry I'm looking at moving to a full size, larger pistol for carrying open. I'm very interested in a 1911 style (or something similar can carry Condition 1), and right now looking at Colt Delta Elite or Kimber.  Can someone explain a bit about what the chamber issue is/can be with the Colt?  My understanding of it is that the chamber doesn't enclose the entire round on the Colt, leaving a small part of the rear of the case not enclosed by the chamber.  That can lead to problems with hotter rounds?  Why is that different than the Kimber (or other 1911?)?  Is that a real issue if I'm only shooting commercial ammo?  Will have hotter commercial self defense loads of course, but I'm not planning on handloading/pushing any boundaries.  Thanks!

Hello FishNFam, The Colt Delta Elite's lack some chamber support being a rampless type barrel the Kimber has better case support for the true power 10mm loadings.

Brass with higher pressures can come out looking like this or worse;

Other 1911 styles are available to include Fusion Arms, STI, RIA. Sig Sauer has just released their 10mm version of the P-220.  EAA's are another choice you may wish to consider that are close to the CZ75 style and are used often in competitions.

Glock now has 3 variants chambered in 10mm the G-20 4.60", the G-29 3.78" and the new G-40 6" which has the machined slide for optics but come with a fill in plate with the factory sights in the "Plastic Fantastic Lego" guns...There reason is all the aftermarket accessories and barrel conversions.

Good luck with your choices...

I'm in the (very small) minority who is completely happy carrying my 10mm Kimber Eclipse cocked-and-locked, but would NOT be happy carrying any other semi-auto cocked-and-locked that did not have BOTH a thumb safety AND a grip safety.  (I even greatly value the additional grip-lever-controlled firing-pin safety that Kimber has).  I want ALL those redundant/independent safeties on my gun, because I carry it in a homemade under-the-shirt vertical shoulder holster, and it is pointing at parts of me that I like, all my waking hours.  So if I HAD to carry something like the new 10mm Sig, I would need the DA/SA version, in order to be at ease carrying it.  And likewise for the BHP, because it has no grip lever ... I wouldn't feel comfortable carrying it cocked-and-locked.  But, admittedly, very few people share my opinion.  (I AM comfortable carrying my S&W69 5-shot L-Frame DA/SA .44mag revolver (NOT cocked, of course ... that would be insane), but that is because it has a very long and heavy DA trigger pull).

When you say "Brass with higher pressures" does that mean standard factory loadings?  And if it deforms the brass--what does that mean for me, since I won't be reloading--will those rounds eject okay?  Thanks!

Stick with the name brand standards, or DE specific boutique loads, and it will be fine. BB, Underwood full power, and high-end handloads will get you in trouble, sooner or later.

Have the Delta and Eclipse and I fire Buffalo Bore 180's out of both no problem.

I run a box of practice and then 10 hot loads.

i have run just about every brand of ammo I could find through my Delta with out a problem.  I will admit to making a few bulge out with some of my hand loaded carbine rounds.
